An
integral part of the community’s identity and the oldest town in the
Flinders Ranges, Melrose has a fascinating history to impart and it is
important that all visiting people learn the history of our pioneers.
The
Melrose Courthouse and Heritage Centre brings that
history to life. It tells the story of opening the north of South
Australia, starting with the history of the police presence, the
most northerly outpost of police administration from 1848 and
headquarters from 1873 to 1882.
The old
Courthouse and cells are the originals and the d
isplays
within lend substance to the judiciary interpretation.
Goyder’s
Line runs through the centre of this area. The interpretive section
about this remarkable
man brings to life the hardships our predecessors suffered. Melrose
had mining, workingmen’s blocks, a village settlement, soldier
settlers, German immigrants, pastoralists and agriculturalists.
Our
men who gave their all during the wars are honoured with a special
section, bringing a close
bond with the local families and people returning to find their
ancestry.
