Edmund HURLSTONE was born about 1760 and married Anna (Hannah) BARTLETT in 1781 at Melbury Osmond. They had about 5 children. Grace born 1786 at Chetnole, Hannah bap. 1789 Melbury Osmond, Catherine born 1792 bap. At Melbury Osmond, Edmund born 1797 bap. Melbury Osmond, Elizabeth born 1799 bap. Melbury Osmond and Benjamin born 1803 bap. Melbury Osmond who married Hannah CHILDS.
It has been discovered that the name was spelled with an 'e' at the end while in England. Two brothers, James & Alfred came out to Australia. Alfred kept the 'e' but James dropped it.
Alfred HURLSTONE left Cork, Ireland in 1852 on the 'HMS Vulcan'. He was one of the company in the infantry, Colonel Valient, which was afterwards mounted and equipped as light cavalry for gold escort duty. He landed at Melbourne and was at Dandenong for three months after which he was stationed at Forest Creek in the escort service. In 1854, he was sent to Ballarat to quell the riots and was under arms there for three weeks, during which time he aided in the capture of seventy-five prisoners. He was twice married with six children.
James HURLSTON came out to Australia firstly in 1854 on the "Mooresfoot". He is also listed as being on the "Ramillies" in 1855 with Ann LEWIS on the same ship.
James & Ann had eight children - Hannah Lewis, Edmund, Charlotte Jane who married Thomas Hector WESTON, John who married Janet Mary Jane ANDERSON, James Stephen who married Hannah Caroline ATTWOOD, Albert George who married Margaret JOHNSON, Annie and Mary Elizabeth Emma who married Arthur John SOPER.
Alfred & his first wife, Elizabeth SIMS, had three children - William Henry Verner who married Mary Jane GORDON, Alfred James and Joseph Edwin. Alfred had three children with his second wife, Caroline Amelia WEBB - Emma, Stephen Peach who married Frances MORELAND and John Thomas.
