ORIGINS
The history of the GIBBS family as recorded in an English paper 1976:
GIBBS GIBB GIB GIBBES GIBSON son of GIBBS. Original families 1066 - 1100 They were Normans not French.
Another family settled in Warwickshire and they had a different coat of arms. Another family settled in Scotland. They became a sub clan to the Buchanan clan and had a separate Coat of Arms. The Wiltshire, Cornwall families were as few as eight families (Wiltshire two families)
DE GIBBES is the pet name of Gilbert from Germany. The name was Romanised in France (GAUL) around the first century to Gilbertus.
Chippenham was a market town for centuries. It was known to King Alfred who used to hunt in the near-by forests. Now a concrete bridge, built in 1966, spans the Avon and leads to the town. Although industrial, it has a 15th century town hall, some attractive half-timber houses and others of stone dating from the 18th century. St. Andrew's Church was rebuilt in the 19th century but the Hungerford Chapel is 15th century and contains some interesting monuments.
