Sheiba was first diagnosed on the 26th March 2003, she has recovered well and seems happy to lay around the house, chase a ping pong ball all over the place, or play with the dogs. Everything that could be done has been done, as well as some accupuncture at the Narrogin Vet hospital which has resulted in her being a lot more relaxed...

7.7.2003 A bladder infection has Sheiba howling everytime her bladder has to be emptied, and she is starting to hide. The problem with this is, if her bladder gets too full and painful she could continue to hide as cats do when they aren't well, and eventually not come home. .This unfortunately would result in a very painful death for her.

After two antibiotic injections Sheiba's is fine, and chasing the dog around the house once again. If another bladder infection occurs the vet has suggested it would be unfair to allow her to keep going through this ..A decision must be made..One thing we want to avoid is Sheiba being in a lot of pain.

21.8.2003 Sheiba has another bladder infection, she has started struggling and crying when I have to squeeze her instead of standing quietly. This means it is time to say goodbye as once these infections start like this they can be continual, and it is obviously very painful . I feel so sorry I couldn't have done more to help her as she was so affectionate and trusting..

R.I.P

Cats can have their tails broken or dislocated for many reasons, but whatever the reason the outcome is usually the same. The cat is incontinent at first and then retains fluid, (having to have the bladder expressed a couple of times a day.) There is lack of tail mobility, no coordination of the back legs and a flacid anus.

Those that were minimally affected recover quickly, but there are those that can take up to six months, as nerves that control the bladder and bowel heal slowly. Some never recover. If the tail doesn't regain mobility it may have to be amputated .

It is important that the bladder doesn't get too full and over stretch, making it harder then to empty. Something else to watch out for is infections they must be treated at once with antibiotics and if they keep occurring the decision must be made about what is best for the cat..

Sheiba was a stray I found under the shop, she had been run over but I didn't realize this until I took her to be sterilised ,and mentioned she didn't like her tail being touched. After examining her the vet explained to me what she thought had happened. A few weeks later Sheiba lost about four inches of her tail, it just fell off one day .When I first saw it I thought it was a row of catterpillas, then I noticed Sheiba and how short her tail was. This photo taken about seven years ago shows off her little tail..

Most of Sheiba's time lately has been spent on or underneath the chair by the fire..
*IF it SHOULD BE*

If it should be that I grow weak,
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
for this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest.
your love for me must stand the test

We've had so many happy years,
what is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so,
the times has come, to let me go.

Take me to where my needs they'll tend,
and please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see,
the kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved
from pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve- it must be you
who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years.
Don't let your heart hold back its tears..
