This first year the competition will be changed to a ‘treasure hunt’
for tokens over a large area with a set time limit. There will be two heats (one
on Saturday and one on Sunday) in
which contestants (all started at the same time) try to find as many tokens as
possible in one and a half hours. There will be a size limit on coils of 11 inches but all tokens will
be able to be seen by any good ground balancing detector including coin
detectors and the Gem Club will also have a few detectors to hire out.
For
more information and a list of the rules for the detecting competition please go
to: this
page
As well as the main detecting
competition there will be lots of other smaller competitions and events such as
treasure hunts for kids, a GPS hunt, a ‘stake-a-claim competition, gold quiz
and maybe a couple of outrageous competitions yet to be decided upon! The main
objective will be to have lots of fun and give out lots of prizes so that no-one
goes away disappointed.
On the Saturday night we have a special performance by Keith Potger
(founding member of The Seekers) and there is a ‘Sheep on a Spit’ meal planned around a
bonfire.

The Shire of Coolgardie have offered to sponsor a large marquee tent
which can house stalls and displays of gold nuggets and gemstones, and workshops
on the theme of gold, metal detecting, lapidary and jewellery making. Come and
bring your display of items you have found either gemstones, rocks or items
found with your metal detector - there is a prize for the best exhibit!
A special
test area will be set up for testing coils and detectors and demonstrating
equipment.
From Friday afternoon till Monday morning there will be free ‘bush’camping on
site but for those requiring a bit more comfort there are two caravan parks and
a motel in Coolgardie so book in early to avoid disappointment!
For anyone wanting to stay on afterwards in the Coolgardie area, the
Coolgardie Gem Club now has some large gold detecting areas not far out of town
in some excellent fossicking country.

APLA will be there again conducting the WA Panning
Championships and have moulded their competition from the World Championship
Rules to suit what they have found to be a popular family fun day, with the
competitors ranging from Juniors through to Ladies and Mens divisions. All
divisions compete together in the final heat and this helps give it the family
atmosphere . It also allows APLA to run as many heats as possible, giving more
competitors a chance and providing continued entertainment throughout the day. Many
competitors enter several heats in order to improve their times and and a
spirited atmosphere of competition develops between rivals.
