HUGE FIREBALL seen on May 30, 2005: 1930(WAST)
A large & brilliant FIREBALL accompanied by showers of flaming sparks, travelling at high speed and low altitude, moving from the north towards the south and also in an easterly direction was seen on Sunday evening, May 30. The colours ranged from RED, through GREEN, BLUE AND YELLOW and left a clear and distinct lasting trail in the sky. Several observers described it as looking like an aircraft about to crash and it appeared to come very close to the ground. Rob Stone and his son, Luke, were driving into PINGELLY, WA, when they noticed the 'object' heading in their direction and travelling from west to east. Rob described it being like an aircraft on fire and surrounded by reddish coloured sparks and flames. They thought that it might have come down somewhere south-east of the town-site. Kathy and Graham Bassett from BROOKTON, were heading home along the Great Southern Highway from Pingelly at the time. Both Kathy and Graham described the 'object' as being just like an aircraft in trouble heading their way. It was surrounded by what appeared to be flame-like sparks and seemed to be coming down in the vicinity of McCabe's Farm, south of Brookton. They both described the event as the most spectacular thing that they had ever seen in the night sky! Anita Lockyer and her partner were driving back home in TAPPING, near to Joondalup at the time. She said that it was a most impressive sight and the brightest thing she had ever seen, a brilliant, colourful 'fireworks' like display even something akin to a missile. Anita described how it started out as huge ball of light which subsequently broke up into two smaller pieces producing multi-coloured trails of reds, greens and blues! Travelling fast and at a low altitude it then it appeared to fizzle out to nothing. She said that in 46 years she had not seen anything like it before!
Strange interference to television reception was reported around this time as well as the temporary loss of telephone connections.
New reports are still coming in from Narrogin and Williams which confirm the descriptions already given. One observer, a Roo Shooter from Williams, Danny Fowler, says that he was in a paddock at the time and well clear of any lights. He said it was appearing to come towards him and looked very much like an aircraft that was 'on fire' and coming in to land, somewhere nearby. The large bright yellowish coloured flaming sparks, which left quite a trail in the sky, disappeared before hitting the ground. It was the most awesome thing he has ever seen. Another observer, Rick Bee, from Narrogin was outside his house when he saw what looked like an aircraft coming towards him. Again, with showering sparks and flame-like fragments coming away from it. He thought that the 'object' was several thousand feet up in the sky but heading in his direction and moving from west to east. He did not think that it was close to the ground when it disappeared from sight.
From these descriptions, it would appear that it was either a large chunk of meteoric material or the re-entry of 'space-junk'. Whatever it was, these observers will remember this event for many years to come.
