Tools A metal ruler or metal edged ruler is essential as it is very easy to run the knife over the edge of a plastic ruler and cut the hand that is holding the it.  A sharp knife will easily pare shavings off the edge of a plastic ruler rendering it useless.

If you haven't got an awl, push the head of a large needle into a cork and use it as a handle to save your hand.

Scoring Lines By using a blunt tool to draw lines before folding you not only make the paper or card easier to fold but also improve the accuracy of the fold. A fine knitting needle makes a perfect scorer.
