Variations on the Slotted Spine

More Slots
As long as it is an even number any number of slots can be used.

Wrapped

This variation needs a multiple of 3 sections.  Sew two sections as normal. Begin the third section and instead of taking the stitch straight down to the next slot on the cover as usual, take the needle under the previous two stitches, loop the thread over and take the needle under the stitches again (from the same direction as before), keep wrapping the two long stitches until you get to the slot, go in through the cover and do the next stitch through the third section as normal.

Blanket Stitch

This variation needs a multiple of 3 sections. Blanket stitch is an embroidery stitch that can be stitched in the same fashion as the wrapped spine, but gives a decorative edge to one side. Instead of wrapping work a series of half hitches (blanket stitches) over the threads of the previous two sections.

Woven

Sew all sections except one as normal.  Begin the last section and instead of taking the stitch straight down to the next slot on the cover as usual, weave back and forth through the previous stitches to create a woven band, when you get to the slot, go in through the cover and do the next stitch through the last section as normal.
