Slotted Spine Tutorial
Steps 5-7

Step Five Making a Template:  This book requires a minimum of 4 holes. (If you are making a bigger book and want more holes, you must have an even number.)   Divide 149 into 5 to give 4 hole positions. This division gives 2 lots of 29.5 and 3 of 30. Cut a strip of paper 149mm long. fold it in half lengthwise.  Mark and pierce holes  in the fold with a needle following the diagram opposite.

Step Six Piercing Holes:  Stack the sections as they will be in the finished book.  Open to the centre of each section and make a small guide mark near the top of the page with a lead pencil.  Make another guide mark at the top of the template.  Align the template on top of the section make sure that both guide marks are at the same edge.  Pierce the holes through all pages in the section at the same time.  Repeat with all the sections.

Step Seven Cut the cover slots:  Centre the template on one of the cover folds.  (Remember to keep the guide mark on the template towards the top of the cover.)  Make marks with a pencil at each hole.  Repeat for the other fold. Beginning a mm or so in from the fold use a sharp tool such as a scalpel to carefully cut a slit across the spine area, stopping a mm from the mark on the opposite fold.
